American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment
The ACUPCC Implementer AASHE

Dear ACUPCC Implementation Liaisons,

Welcome to the first issue of The ACUPCC Implementer! As the new Climate Program Manager for AASHE, I am here to help you, the Implementation Liaisons (ILs), fulfill your schools' obligations under the ACUPCC. This means being in more direct contact with you, developing resources related to all phases of the Commitment, and keeping you up to date on news and ideas that can help you carry out activities aimed at reducing your schools' greenhouse gas emissions--beginning with the launch of this new monthly newsletter, to be distributed during the first week of every month. It has been great to talk with so many of you personally over the past few weeks, and I have been keeping track of your questions and requests. This newsletter is intended to serve you, so please let me know what issues you'd like to see it address! And let me know if you have any ideas to share with other schools, like the useful piece by Walter Simpson of the University of Buffalo, below. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,
Toni Nelson

Submission of Greenhouse Gas Reports and Helpful Tips on Using the Reporting System

By Toni Nelson, Climate Program Manager, AASHE

As most of you are aware, September 15 marked an important deadline for the ACUPCC. It was the due date for charter signatories to report their greenhouse gas inventories for the most recent year available (previous years were submitted on a voluntary basis). Given that the website housing the new reporting tool was launched only in August, schools did a great job of getting their reports in. To date, 241 reports have been submitted by 172 schools, with one school, the University of Vermont, submitting all the way back to 1990! However, a number of Charter Signatories have not yet submitted their reports or requested an extension of the deadline. If you are one of these schools, please don’t hesitate to contact me so I can help. Below are a few hints that might make it easier for you to use the reporting system... Read more.

Building Energy Signs: Delivering the Shocking News about Energy Costs

By Walter Simpson, CEM, LEED AP
University at Buffalo Energy Officer, retired

On a busy campus, raising energy and environmental awareness can be difficult. It becomes a challenge to find effective ways of getting the message out there and getting attention when so much else is going on. Over the years at the University at Buffalo we tried many approaches to encouraging participation in our energy conservation program. While drawing attention to the dollar saving potential of energy conservation typically only got attention from the upper administration and facilities staff, the wider campus community was generally more impressed and more motivated by the environmental benefits, e.g. by saving energy, we can reduce fossil fuel reliance and greenhouse gas emissions... Tackling Scope 3 Emissions

By Niles Barnes, Projects Coordinator, AASHE
And Julian Dautremont-Smith, Associate Director, AASHE

During the first round of greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting for the ACUPCC, we heard from quite a few signatories who were struggling to calculate their emissions from commuting and air travel. These sources are responsible for a significant portion of many institutions' total emissions but they are also among the most difficult emissions sources on which to gather reliable data. The following guidance is intended to help campuses track and ultimately reduce emissions related to commuting and air travel... Read more.

Version 6 of the Clean Air-Cool Planet Campus Carbon Calculator Released on October 1

By Jennifer Andrews, Campus Program Manager
Clean Air-Cool Planet

Clean Air-Cool Planet has just released an important new resource for climate action plan creation by ACUPCC signatories. The latest version (v6) of its free Campus Carbon Calculator features greatly expanded projection and solutions modules, designed to aid schools that have completed greenhouse gas inventories in developing long term, comprehensive climate action plans based on those inventories. The new modules facilitate analysis of carbon reduction options, determining project payback times and net present values, cost per ton reduced, and other relevant markers. For those interested in learning more about this new tool, and how it can help you create your campus climate action plan, CA-CP is offering a "Creating Climate Action Plans" webinar on October 14, at 10 am. Go to https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/701124697 to register for the webinar, or http://www.cleanair-coolplanet.org/toolkit to learn more, and to download the new version of the Calculator and User's Guide.
