American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment
The ACUPCC Implementer AASHE

Dear Implementation Liaisons,

Welcome to the second issue of The ACUPCC Implementer! It's been a busy month as we've worked to improve the way the ACUPCC Reporting System works and assist schools with getting overdue reports submitted. To date, 200 of the 397 charter signatories have submitted their greenhouse gas reports, and an additional 101 have submitted extension requests. This is excellent progress, but it also means there are still almost 100 schools that have not reported, and this fact is getting picked up by the press. Last week, the Christian Science Monitor ran an article entitled "Campuses find going green can be tough: Some 580 colleges have vowed to cut their greenhouse-gas impact to zero. Many missed the first deadline." To make the Commitment succeed, it is important to demonstrate that signatories take the Commitment seriously and are committed to fulfilling its requirements. A letter to the presidents and chancellors of schools who are behind in submitting their reports will be sent on November 17 to remind them of the importance of the Commitment's reporting requirements. If you are having difficulties or need assistance with these reports, please don’t hesitate to contact me at toni@aashe.org. I am enjoying getting to know you through emails and phone calls, and I look forward to meeting many of you at the AASHE2008 conference this month!

Best regards,
Toni Nelson

Statistics from the Initial Submissions of Greenhouse Gas Reports

Many of you have expressed an interest in learning how your school compares to schools with similar characteristics, so we analyzed the greenhouse gas reports submitted by the first 172 institutions. In our next iteration of the ACUPCC Reporting System, we will provide more data views, but for now the tables below provide an initial overview.

Update on Changes to the ACUPCC Reporting System

An updated version of the ACUPCC Reporting System went live on October 27. A number of changes were made to improve the way data is collected and accessed. Please note the need for each school to keep the information in its Implementation Profile current, particularly in regards to the Implementation Liaison name, email, and phone. For example, the recent email inviting ILs to the networking session at the AASHE2008 conference was sent just to the ILs designated in the Implementation Profile. The ACUPCC Implementer, in contrast, is sent to every person with an account in the ACUPCC Reporting System, as it contains information helpful to anyone using that system. More changes are described below... Read more.

Clean Air-Cool Planet's Newest Carbon Calculator Counts Potential Dollars and Emissions Saved

By Jennifer Andrews, Campus Program Manager
Clean Air-Cool Planet

Campus administrators, staff or students weighing which energy and carbon reduction projects will be most valuable now have a new, free tool to help them decide. Clean Air-Cool Planet's updated Campus Carbon Calculator helps to measure campus emissions and determine viable long-term strategies to reduce universities' carbon footprints. Currently in use at more than a third of campuses across the U.S. and Canada, the recently-released version 6 of the Calculator includes new Projection and Solutions modules that will make it easier for administrators to plan for money-saving efficiencies on their campuses, make action plans easier to comprehend for trustees, and provide a powerful new educational tool for instructors and students... Making it a University-Wide Commitment

By Elizabeth Davey, Program Manager
Center for Bioenvironmental Research, Tulane University

President Scott Cowen launched this year's work on the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment with a personal e-mail to the Tulane University community. We're used to hearing from President Cowen on important issues that affect the university. Since 2001, he has sent an e-mail weekly. He often describes his week--reflections on events he has attended, and upcoming matters that are significant to the school. Since Hurricane Katrina, he has shared important news on our university and our community's recovery, as well as insights this experience has given him into how a university community should face the challenges of our times...
