Crafting Your Climate Action Plan: Sharing Best Practices

Facilitators: Bowen Close, Pomona College; Matt Williams, Auburn University
In this workshop, participants will learn how Auburn University and Pomona College have produced their climate action and sustainability plans, and lessons gained from their experiences. Leading Your Sustainability Team toward Climate Neutrality: Mapping the Future of the ACUPCC

Facilitators: Jacqueline Johnson, President, University of Minnesota, Morris; Mitchell Thomashow, President, Unity College
In this facilitated session participants will discuss the future direction for the ACUPCC network and initiative, as well as the president's role in implementation climate action plans in four key areas:
  • Financing: What is the president's role in securing financing for emissions-reduction projects on campus and sustainability education, research, and community engagement?
  • Academics: What is the president's role in integrating a sustainability perspective across the curriculum? What strategies can be used to build faculty support and empower faculty leadership?
  • Institutionalization: What is the president's role in ensuring a commitment to sustainability becomes a part of the culture of the institution? How can the president be sure that momentum will carry on after they leave the institution?
  • Partnerships: What is the president's role in fostering partnerships with other institutions, with the local community, and with business? What entities are necessary to make the goal of climate neutrality possible? How can presidents meet their climate goals, open up new funding opportunities, and improve town/gown relationships?
Concurrent Work Session II: Implementation Liaisons

Building on the success of past Implementation Liaison networking sessions, the ACUPCC program team will facilitate small group discussions around key barriers and enablers to implementing the Commitment:

  • How to engage faculty, students, staff, and administrators in the climate action planning and implementation process
  • How to leverage partnerships and the collective power of the ACUPCC network to more effectively meet your goals
The session will have a strong emphasis on creating space for building relationships with your colleagues at signatory institutions, and soliciting feedback on program focus areas for 2011.
